Joseph Griffith Young, born 1836 in Charlestown, Chester County, PA; died 1889 in Charlestown, Chester County, PA. He was the son of George E. Young Sr. and Phoebe Griffith. He married Sarah Elizabeth Mann April 06, 1865. Joseph was a member of the Company K of the 4th Pennsylvania Reserves known as the Exton Guards. He was recruited by William Babe of Lionville and later to by Enos Christman of W. Vincent and Nathan Pennypacker of Charlestown Twp. About 113 Chester County Soldiers made up the regiment and most of them were from Charlestown, W. Whiteland, and W. Pikeland. The regiment mustered out in June 1864. It fought at Beaver Dam Creek, Gaines Mill, Glendale, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Cloyd’s Mountain.1
