Hoopes, Passmore W.PrivateSept. 20, 1861Transferred to 190th reg. P. V., May 31, 1864. Note: “Passmore Hoopes, son of Lewis Hoopes of this Borough, arrived at his home on Saturday night last. He was a member of the Brandywine Guards , and was taken prisoner some time last spring. He was confined in Richmond for a time and then removed to Andersonville, Georgia. He states that he has seen our men die at that place by the hundreds from starvation. There was to be one thousand of our men paroled for exchange, and Mr. H. took his place with the men that were ordered out; the surgeon passed along the line and when he came to him, he ordered him back to his quarters, remarking that he was not sick enough to be exchanged. He went back to the pen, and there pondering over the last hope of reaching home, he determined to make another attempt. So putting on his haversack he started out – he was halted by the guards and questioned as to where he was going, his reply was that we had gone into his quarters for his haversack, which he had forgotten, and was going with the crowd to be exchanged. He was then permitted to pass and thus got away from the foul den in which he had been incarcerated. He states that their only fare was a little corn meal and a few beans. he is very weak and will require sometime to regain his natural strength.”Village Record, December 10, 1864
