This second record, also with the surname spelt as “McPherran,” is also blank save for a second cross-reference to “McPherson, James A.” The third record for “McPherson, James A.” indicates that he entered service on June 21, 1861 as the 1st Sgt of Company I, 5th Reserves. He was then promoted to 2nd Lt. on June 28, 1861 and transferred to Company F, 5th Reserves. On July 1, 1862 he was again promoted to Capt., Company F, and on May 7, 1864, to Maj., 5th Reserves.
