The Field & Staff of the 5th Pennsylvania Reserves.
NAME. | RANK. | IN DATE. | REMARKS. |
---|---|---|---|
Gregg, John Irvin | Colonel | June 21, 1861 | Discharged for promotion, Colonel, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Gregg was elected Colonel of the 5th Pa Reserves on June 21, but left the regiment on the same day before his commission from the state could be obtained. |
Simmons, Seneca Galusha | Colonel | June 21, 1861 | Mortally Wounded at Charles City Cross Roads on June 30, 1862. |
Zentmyer, Franklin | Major | June 21, 1861 | Promoted from Capt., Company I, 5th Reserves, to Maj., 5th Reserves, Aug. 1, 1862, killed, Dec. 13, 1862, at Fredericksburg, burial record, died, Dec. 31, 1862, at Richmond, Va. Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, the record for “Zentmyer Frank” contains the identical and contradictory remarks that Bates provides in his roll about this officer’s place of death. It is to be noted that a “Zentmyer, David” also served in Company I, (i.e., the Company from which Frank Zenmyer was promoted from Capt. to Maj.), was commissioned 1st Lt., Oct. 1, 1861 and was killed, Dec. 13, 1862, at Fredericksburg. A possible explanation – subject to verification – is that Frank Zentmyer was wounded (i.e., not killed) and taken prisoner at Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862; he was then removed from the battlefield to Richmond, Va. where he died of his wounds on Dec. 31, 1862. In other words, details about the two men’s service may have been confused when their records were compiled. Note: A January 1863 Newspaper Article states the following: “Maj. Frank Zentmyer.- The father of Major Zentmyer has recieved a letter from Richmond informing him of the death of his brave son. The Major lost a leg at Fredericksburg, was taken prisoner and sent to Richmond where he died on the 31st ult.” Source: The Huntingdon Globe, January 21, 1863. |

Carpenter, John Thomas | Surgeon | June 21, 1861 | Promoted from Surg., 5th Reserves, to Brigade Surgeon, date unknown, transferred to the Western Army, date unknown. Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, the record for “Carpenter, John T.” provides neither the date(s) on which he was promoted to Brigade Surgeon and transferred to the Western Army, nor the identity of the brigade to which he was attached. |
Lane, Samuel G. | Surgeon | Sept. 16, 1861 | Promoted from Surg., 5th Reserves, by Special Order 122, Adjutant General’s Office, War Department, to Surgeon of Enrolling Board, 16th District, Pennsylvania, Mar. 10, 1864, to Assistant Surgeon General of Pennsylvania, date unknown, to Bv. Lt. Col., Mar. 13, 1865. |
Grim, Henry A. | Surgeon | April 16, 1862 | Promoted from Asst. Surg., 12th reg. P. V., to Surg., 5th Reserves, mustered out with regiment, June 11, 1864. Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, three records were found for “Grim, Henry, A.” The first is for his service with the 5th Reserves and indicates that he was promoted to Surg. and transferred from the 12th Reserves on Apr. 16, 1864. The second is for his service with the 12th Reserves as an Asst. Surg.; it too indicates that he was promoted to Surg. and transferred from the 12th Reserves to the 5th Reserves, but on Apr. 13, 1864. Both records indicate that he mustered into Federal Service and the 12th Reserves as an Asst. Surg. on Oct. 6, 1862. (The date of April 16, 1862 that Bates gives as the muster-in date with the 5th Reserves does not agree with the records in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, that is: Bates’ date is some two years earlier.) The third record that exists for a “Grim, Henry A.” serving with the Field and Staff of the 12th Reserves is blank and cross-referenced to a “Grimm, Henry, A.” However, no record was located under this last name. |
Marsh, Nathaniel F. | Assistant Surgeon | June 21, 1861 | Promoted from Asst. Surg., 5th Reserves to Surg., 4th reg. Pa. Calvary, 64th reg. P. V. Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, the record for “N. F. Marsh” does not provide the date(s) of his promotion and transfer to the 4th reg. Pa. Calvary. No record was located for his service subsequent to his promotion and transfer. |
Donnelly, Edward | Assistant Surgeon | June 21, 1861 | Promoted to Surg., 2nd Pa. Reserves, Apr. 28, 1862. |
Davis, William H. | Assistant Surgeon | June 27, 1862 | Promoted to Surg., 4th Pa. Reserves, Dec. 20, 1862. |
Groff, J. M. | Assistant Surgeon | Aug. 2, 1862 | Discharged on Surgeon’s certificate, July 21, 1863. |
Johnson, O.C. | Assistant Surgeon | Mar. 9, 1863 | Discharged on Surgeon’s certificate, Sept. 28, 1863. |
Witman, Harrison T. | Assistant Surgeon | Sept. 16, 1863 | Promoted to Bv. Maj., Mar 13, 1865, wounded, May 30, 1864, at Bethesda Church, mustered out with regiment, June 11, 1864. |
Conser, Solomon L. M. | Chaplain | Unknown | Mustered out by Special Order of the War Department, Nov. 1, 1862. Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, the record for “Consor, S. L. M.” is blank and is cross-referenced to the record for “Const, S. L. M.” This record does not provide any additional details with respect to the circumstances under which he mustered out. It also notes that there was no record of his having ever been mustered into Federal service. |
Reber, Effinger L. | Sergeant Major | June 21, 1861 | Transferred to 191st reg. P. V., Vet. Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, the record for “Reber, E. L.” indicates that he entered service as a Corporal with Company D, 5th Reserves. The record also states that this man re-enlisted the 17th of a month in 1864 (location not disclosed) but it does not provide the date on which he transferred to the 191st reg. P. V. Editor’s note: for those men serving in the companies of the 5th Reserves who either chose to re-enlist at the end of their 3-year term of service or had not completed their term of service, the transfer to the 191st reg. P. V. occurred on June 6, 1864. It is therefore likely that the men of the Field & Staff who did transfer to the 191st reg. P. V., also did so on or around June 6, 1864. |
Smith, Robert Wirt | Sergeant Major | June 21, 1861 | Promoted to Drum Major, date unknown. Promoted to Sergeant Major, October 1861. Promoted to 2nd Lt., Company G, 5th Reserves, Aug. 8, 1862. Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, the record for “Smith, R. M.” is blank and is not cross-referenced to any other record. The Bates roll does include for Company G, 5th Reserves, a “Smith, Robert W.” who was promoted on Aug. 8, 1862 from Sgt. Maj. to 2nd Lt., Company G, 5th Reserves, and was killed in action on Aug. 30, 1862 at Second Bull Run. A record also exists in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, for a “Smith, Robert W.” but it makes no reference to this man having served as Sgt. Maj. of the 5th Reserves. It further indicates that this man entered service in Company K, 5th Reserves; a blank record does exist for his service with this unit but it is cross-referenced back to the one first mentioned above for Company G, 5th Reserves.Read Medical Case |

Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, the record for “Swoope, G. P.” is blank except for a cross-reference to Company I, 5th Reserves. No record was found for a “Swoope, G. P.” who served with Company I, 5th Reserves. However, the Bates roll does include for Company I, 5th Reserves” a “Swope, Granville P. who was promoted from Sgt. Maj., 5th Reserves, to 1st Lt., Company I, 5th Reserves on Mar. 4, 1863. There is also a record for ” Swope, Granville P.” in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, which contains the details provided above and that notes the surname’s spelling as “Swoope” for this man’s association with the Field & Staff, 5th Reserves. |

Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, the record for “Mullen, Harry” is blank except for a cross-reference to a “Mullen, Henry” of Company A, 191st reg. P. V. A record does exist for a “Mullen, Henry” who served with Company A, 191st reg. P. V.; the record, however, is also blank and therefore provides no further information. It is also to be noted that there is a third record for a “Mullen, Henry” associated with Company K, 5th Reserves which has an identical cross-reference as the record for “Mullen, Harry:” it too is blank save for the afore-mentioned cross-reference. |
Harris, J. W. | Commissary Sergeant | June 21, 1861 | Transferred to 191st reg. P. V., Vet. Editor’s note: in the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File 1861-1866, no record was found for a “Harris, J. W.” who served with the Field & Staff, 5th Reserves. |
Johnson, John H. | Hospital Stewart | June 21, 1861 | Transferred to 191st reg. P. V., Vet. Both records are blank, except for a referral to the Field & Staff, 191st reg. P.V. A record does exist for a “Johnson, John H.” who served with the Field & Staff of the 191st reg. P.V.; the record, however, is also blank and therefore provides no additional information. |

There is a record for a “Smeadley, William L.” associated with the Field & Staff of the 191st reg. P.V.; the record, however, is blank and therefore provides no additional information. |
