William Lewis McQuaid, son of William Huston McQuaid and wife Catherine Crawford McQuaid was born in Franklin, Venango County, PA on 26 Sep 1839 and baptized at 1st Presbyterian Church, Franklin. The family moved to the Logans Ferry area of Plum Twp, Allegheny County betw. 1850 and 1860. Known as “Lew”, W. L. was enrolled in Co C, 10th PA Reserve (aka 39th Infantry) on 25 Apr 1861 and, with the rank of Sgt, rec’d a medical discharge on 10 Dec 1862 after receiving a gunshot wound at 2nd Bull Run in Aug of that year. On 13 Apr 1860 he was married (1st) to Mary Elizabeth Culp, who died 1 Mar 1874; they had at least these five children: Alfaretta (b. 1 Oct 1860), Franklin M (b. 2 Oct 1863), Harmer D (b. 10 Nov 1865), Mary E (b. 15 Sep 1870, and Lulu N (b. 14 Aug 1872.) In 1868, the family became members of St Mark’s Lutheran Church of Springdale. (Lew joined in Jan 1869.) W. L. and Elizabeth Shoop were married on 8 Oct 1878, at Grace Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh PA, by Pastor J. K. Melhorn, founding pastor of St. Mark’s. There were two sons from this marriage: George Edwin, b. 11 Jun 1881 and Guy Augustine, b. 24 Jul 1884.
