The Society exists to ensure that the service of the Pennsylvania Reserves is documented accurately, contextualized responsibly, and made accessible to the public without distortion, presentism, or loss of evidentiary integrity. Our work emphasizes historical clarity, documentary stewardship, and longโ€‘term preservation over promotion or commemoration alone.

Our Mission

The mission of the Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps Historical Society is to preserve the historic memory of the Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps through research, preservation, interpretation, and public education.

We pursue this mission by supporting original research, safeguarding historical materials, facilitating responsible interpretation, and sharing reliable historical knowledge with descendants, scholars, educators, and the general public.

What We Do

The Societyโ€™s work centers on several interconnected areas:

  • Historical Research and Documentation | Conducting and supporting research into the service, organization, and experiences of the Pennsylvania Reserves at the Corps, regimental, and company levels, including genealogical and military service analysis.
  • Interpretation and Public History | Producing interpretive writing, lectures, traveling exhibits, and educational materials that present the history of the Pennsylvania Reserves in a clear, contextualized, and evidenceโ€‘based manner.
  • Collections and Stewardship | Preserving historical documents, photographs, and related materials through responsible archival practices and donor stewardship, with an emphasis on provenance and longโ€‘term access.
  • Monuments, Memorials, and Gravesites | Supporting the identification, documentation, and preservation of burial sites, headstones, and memorials associated with members of the Pennsylvania Reserves, in coordination with cemeteries, families, and appropriate authorities.

How We Approach History

The Society approaches history as a discipline grounded in evidence, context, and restraint. We distinguish between primary documentation, later interpretation, and modern analysis, and we strive to present each within its proper historical framework.

Interpretive materials preserved or published by the Society may reflect the perspectives and methodologies of their original authors and periods. Their inclusion does not imply uncritical endorsement, but rather recognition of their place within the broader historical record.

Our work prioritizes accuracy, transparency, and respect for the historical record over narrative convenience or contemporary agendas.

Organization and Governance

The Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps Historical Society is a volunteerโ€‘run nonprofit organization governed by a board of directors. The Society operates in accordance with its bylaws and policies and relies on the contributions of volunteers, researchers, and supporters committed to responsible historical stewardship.

The Society does not operate as a reenactment group or advocacy organization. Its focus remains firmly on historical research, interpretation, and preservation.

Looking Ahead

As research continues and additional materials are identified, the Society will expand its interpretive and educational offerings while maintaining a disciplined, evidenceโ€‘based approach. Future initiatives may include additional research projects, publications, public programs, and digital resources designed to support longโ€‘term access to the history of the Pennsylvania Reserves.
